The government has a responsibility to put the Post Office on a sustainable footing before it can be mutualised, warns Unite, the UK's largest union.
Unite's warning comes on the day the government announces proposals to mutualise the Post Office.
Ian Tonks, Unite national officer, said:
"Unite supports the principle of mutualisation, but is concerned that the Post Office is not yet sustainable.
"Unless the Post Office can be put on a sustainable footing, for which government has a responsibility, there will be little benefit from a mutual Post Office. The government will also have to take an ongoing responsibility for the Post Office, as a stakeholder following any mutualisation.
"Unite also welcomes the proposal that a stakeholder forum is to be established to further develop the Post Office. However, Unite believes that this body, which will be key in developing how the Post Office will work in the future, should be chaired by someone with experience and knowledge of mutual organisations.
"We expect to be invited to participate in this forum and look forward to working with other interested groups to develop how a mutual organisation can be made sustainable."
