26 July 2012
Unite members will be demonstrating outside Turkey's London embassy tomorrow in protest at the Turkish government's crackdown on airline workers taking industrial action.
The protest at new legislation to ban Turkey's aviation workers taking strike action – which has seen 305 Turkish Airlines' workers, who protested at this decision, being sacked by text and email – coincides with a visit of the country's Prime Minister, Tayyip Erdogan to the London Olympics.
The rally will be at the Turkish Embassy, 43 Belgrave Square, London SW1X 8PA between 11.00am and noon tomorrow (Friday) and there will be a display of 305 red and white balloons, representing each one the sacked workers.
Unite members will be joined by representatives of the International Transport Workers' Federation and London's Turkish community.
Unite regional officer, Rhys McCarthy said:“What we are calling for is for the Turkish government to rescind this repressive law that bans aviation workers in Turkey taking legitimate industrial action – and that the 305 workers are immediately reinstated in their jobs.
“Prime Minister Erdogan's visit highlights that Turkey has less than a perfect record on human rights – the case of the aviation workers being the latest example of the abuse of individual freedoms, such as the right to strike.”
