Unite, Britain's biggest union, says that Britain is going backwards under the Tories as the Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures show the real value of average earnings has fallen back to 2003 levels.
Unite general secretary, Len McCluskey said:
"Britain isn't just being squeezed, our country is going backwards under the Tory-led coalition. The nation is now characterised by falling wages, insecure employment and cuts to welfare.
"Across the Atlantic, Obama is talking about raising living standards, boosting the minimum wage and pushing for greater equality. It is a stark contrast to the hopeless message from David Cameron and George Osborne."
"The people of this country need hope and policies to boost jobs, wages and investment. Instead there has been a ten year drop in living standards and Britain is facing ten more years of austerity. This means 20 years worth of Tory misery."
