MPs pay demands reeks of self interest

A survey carried out today by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa) found MPs believe they deserve a 32 per cent pay hike to £86,250.
The research, which politicians completed anonymously, found that 69 per cent thought they were underpaid on their current £65,738. The average level suggested for the salary was £86,250. Conservatives were the most likely to believe they were underpaid, with 47 per cent saying that was the case.
Unite national officer Rachael Maskell said: "This is the sort of self interest which gives politics such a bad reputation especially at a time when people want their leaders to be in touch with the problems they face.
"It beggars belief that while hardworking families are facing pay freezes and having their benefits slashed, MPs think they deserve a 32 per cent pay increase. This survey might be anonymous, but this only serves to put a stain on all parliamentarians.
"NHS workers are expecting to be offered up to a one per cent pay increase, which in real terms is a pay cut. The fact that MPs want a pay increase 32 times that will rightly infuriate hardworking staff at hospitals up and down the country. To make matters worse some NHS workers are having their pay cut by 30 per cent and the threat of performance related pay looms over NHS workers in England. "
