London planning awards seeks greatest contributor to planning and development in capital

Entries are now open for the 2012/13 London Planning Awards, the annual competition to celebrate the best in the planning world – crucial to creating and maintaining the world class livability of the UK capital.
This year's awards include a special one off award - The Greatest Contribution to Planning and Development over the Last 10 Years - to mark the tenth anniversary of the London Planning Awards.
Those nominated include Sir George Iacobescu of Canary Wharf Group; Francis Salway, former Chief Executive of Land Securities; David Shaw from the Crown Estate; Sir John Armitt and Sir David Higgins from the Olympic Delivery Team; and Tony Pidgley of Berkeley Group. Established in 2002 and run jointly by the Mayor, London First, the Royal Town Planning Institute and London Councils, the annual awards aim to recognise excellence and showcase examples that are leading the urban renaissance in London; raise expectations and standards; and improve the profile of planning.
Last year's awards saw The Granary, King's Cross, win the prestigious Mayor's Award for Planning Excellence, in recognition of the careful renovation of the historic Grade II listed building.
Other winners included retail and office development One New Change in the City; St Paul's Way Trust School, Tower Hamlets; Highbury Gardens housing development, Islington; Margaret McMillan Park, Lewisham; the 'Arsenal on the move' regeneration project, Islington and St Pancras Chambers refurbishment in Camden.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said:
"Over the past 10 years the London Planning Awards have highlighted the very best of our city's development, rewarding innovative and inspiring projects that have left a lasting and positive imprint on the capital. Creative planning has the power to improve our communities and is crucial in helping London to maintain its position as the greatest city in which to live, work and invest.
“We have some fantastic nominations for the greatest contributor award and I'm sure that the other categories will once again showcase the very best that London's planners, architects and designers have to offer."
Baroness Jo Valentine, Chief Executive of London First, said:
“Some of the best planners, architects and developers in the world work in London, demonstrating what is possible when we work together to create great buildings, places and neighbourhoods. Last year's winners were outstanding and will no doubt strengthen London's position as a world city – I'm sure this year's entries will be of an equally high standard.”
Colin Haycock, President of the Royal Town Planning Institute, said:

London Councils Executive Member for Planning, Councillor Chris Roberts said:
“The development of London in the decade since the London Planning Awards began has shown what an impact innovative planning can have on our city. We would like to encourage as many councils as possible to enter the awards to highlight the central role boroughs play in the planning of London. “
