LGA response to government's fire service college announcement

Responding to the Government's announcement today on the future of the Fire Service College, Cllr Brian Coleman, Chairman of the LGA's Fire Services Management Committee, said:
“It is good news that government has listened to the views of the sector and that there is now finally a clear intention to press ahead with getting the outside investment the college so badly needs.
“Our firefighters deserve the very best training facilities to ensure they are well prepared for their vital work saving lives and keeping the public safe, but they have been sold short by years of underfunding which has left the college unfit for the 21st century and financially unsustainable.
“The LGA and fire authorities have been clear from early on that the only sensible way forward for the college is to bring in the private sector to provide the business acumen and extra investment that will help transform it into the first - class facility our firefighters require.
“We will now be working with government as it starts the tendering process to ensure that the college finds new ownership which fully meets the needs of the fire service.”
