EBLEX led mission of lamb exporters to Montreal and Toronto this week in a visit jointly organised with UK Trade and Investment.
The group presented the product to Canadian importers and participated for the first time in the SIAL food trade fair in Montreal. Lamb cooking demonstrations were among the attractions on the menu during the exhibition.
Canada imports about 50 per cent of the lamb it consumes, totalling around 12,000 tonnes, and although individual consumption is small at one kilogramme per capita, the market is growing.
Jean-Pierre Garnier, EBLEX export manager, said: “Canada is a totally new market for us. Market research we have commissioned shows clearly potential for lamb export, particularly as the product availability from New Zealand and Australia, who traditionally supply this market, has declined.
“Preliminary contacts with importers are positive and we expect a good response, particularly in Ontario where 56% of lamb is consumed. However, above all, we expect the taste and presentation of our lamb to win new supporters.”
SIAL Canada takes place in the Palais de Congress, Montreal, on May 9, 10 and 11.
