GMB calls on every hospital, school and meals on wheels service to verify they have not served horsemeat to vulnerable people

GMB, the union for public sector workers, commented on the use of horse meat in beef products.
Brian Strutton GMB National Secretary for public services said “Hospitals, schools and council care services provide millions of meals with meat products every week to the young, the elderly and the sick. With ever tightening budgets some of these may have turned to cheaper meat supplies and in-advertently been or still be using horsemeat.
With rising public alarm over the prevalent use of horsemeat in retail food products and possible health issues the government must require all public services that feed vulnerable members of society to verify that they have not used horsemeat. This is necessary to allay public concern or to highlight where there may have been a problem.
Thus it would seem a sensible precaution for government to ask these key public service providers to give assurances that they are not using and have not used horsemeat products.”
