For too long the transition between school and work has been a cliff edge for those with autism

In response to the Department of Education’s supported internship scheme, Sarah Lambert, Head of Policy at The National Autistic Society, said:
“A recent survey run by the NAS indicated that a third of those aged 16 – 24 with autism are not in education, employment or training (NEET), which is more than double the number among the general population.
“The majority of people with autism want to work and given the opportunity can be a real asset to the workplace.
“For too long the transition between school and further education or employment has been a cliff edge for many young people with autism, who have been unable to get the support required to move forward with their lives.
“This new programme marks a positive step forwards in improving the employment opportunities of young adults with autism and other disabilities.”
