GMB MEMBERS EMPLOYED BY SODEXO BEGIN INDUSTRIAL ACTION AT NEW SCOTTISH POLICE HQ IN FIFE IN CLAIM FOR SCOTTISH LIVING WAGE OF £7.20 PER HOUR
These hard working, low paid, predominantly women workers are paid below a basic subsistence wage which is all the more shocking because it is done in our name says GMB
GMB members employed by Sodexo will begin industrial action on Wednesday 6th February at Tulliallan Police College, the new single Scottish Police Force's HQ and Police training college.
The action in the form of an immediate overtime ban is being taken by catering staff employed by Sodexo at the Fife site following a ballot by the GMB.
Staff voted unanimously to take action following the rejection of a much delayed pay offer of 1% with a 1.5% supplement from November – seven months after the pay anniversary date.
GMB claim is that the workers should receive the Scottish Living Wage of £7.20 an hour. The vast majority of the staff are on a minimum rate of £6.37.
Richard Leonard, GMB Scotland Organiser, said“These hard working, low paid, predominantly women workers are just looking for justice. It is a source of shame that any workers are paid below a basic subsistence wage – but when it happens in the public sector it is all the more shocking because it is done in our name.
Across Scottish local government and central government the Scottish Living Wage has been adopted. These working men and women are not directly employed by the Scottish Police Authority, but they are employed for the Scottish Police Authority, they deserve to be treated with justice and fairness.
All too often workers like this are invisible and forgotten – an afterthought – we hope that by supporting this action GMB will ensure that Sodexo and the Scottish Police Authority sit up and take notice and that the Scottish Government puts pressure on them to pay a living wage.
GMB is willing to enter into meaningful negotiations to avert the need for industrial action, but so far the phone hasn't rung.”
