Energy Bill must seek to cut demand

Campaigners join MPs in calling for a much greater focus on reducing the total demand for electricity.
Following the publication of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee (ECC) report on the draft Energy Bill [1], the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has backed MPs' calls for a much greater commitment to reducing the total demand for electricity in the Bill. Such a focus would reduce the need for new intrusive energy infrastructure in the countryside.
Tom Leveridge, Senior Energy Campaigner for CPRE, says:
“The lack of consideration given by the Government to reducing electricity demand is alarming, particularly given the controversy over new energy infrastructure, including transmission lines, in the countryside.
“We strongly welcome the Committee's recommendation that demand reduction should feature much more prominently in the Bill. This is the cheapest and most effective way to cut carbon while at the same time protecting our landscape from intrusive development.”
