The Chancellor’s ditching of the flawed proposals for regional pay in the NHS was the “nail in the coffin” for trusts in the South West which want to introduce local deals, Unite, the country’s biggest union, said.
Unite head of health, Rachael Maskell said: “George Osborne recognised in his Autumn Statement that the plans for regional pay in the NHS were unworkable and unfair, and would do nothing to improve patient services.
“The Chancellor’s announcement should drive the final nail into the coffin of plans by trusts belonging to the South West Pay, Terms and Conditions Consortium to introduce local deals in the south west of England.
“Regardless of the pay issue, it is clear that regional variation is bad for services.
“We are still concerned at the proposals that could see performance-related pay introduced into the health service – you can’t equate care for the sick with a time-and-motion study.”
Unite, which has a 100,000 members in the health service, is currently canvassing its NHS members for their views on the NHS Employers’ plans to dilute the terms of Agenda for Change. The union is recommending rejection of the employers’ proposals. The Unite consultation closes on 17 December.
