Councils respond to 'disappointing' turnout for PCC elections

Commenting on the election of police and crime commissioners, Sir Merrick Cockell, Chairman of the Local Government Association, said:
“The election of these 41 new police and crime commissioners marks a seismic change in the way that policing in this country is run, and will have a huge impact on the way that police, councils and other parts of the public sector work together to keep people safe.
“These first few weeks in office will see commissioners having to take some crucial decisions, including the setting of their first budgets and publishing force-wide police and crime plans. Local authorities in every one of the 41 policing areas will be providing the support and information on their areas that PCCs will need to hit the ground running while police and crime panels stand ready to provide constructive advice and scrutinise the important decisions commissioners will make.
“It is disappointing that voters have not been prepared to turn out in great numbers for these elections; however, following yesterday's ballot, the most important thing now will be to look ahead and ensure PCCs are given all the support they need to be effective representatives of the public.
“Because of the huge geographic areas commissioners have to cover, they will need to work closely with councillors who also have a democratic mandate and really know their patch to ensure they hear about all the issues which matter to their residents, whether it be anti-social behaviour, metal theft, alcohol related crime or repeat offenders.
“Town halls and PCCs will be united in their work to drive down crime and keep people safe.”
