Age UK comments on Lord Wei's suggestions that recently retired people should do 'National Service'

Michelle Mitchell, Charity Director General of Age UK said:“We think that volunteering can be a great thing to do in retirement - and nearly a third of those aged between 65 and 74 already volunteer. We would encourage more retired people to volunteer as it can help people adjust to their new lifestyle and bring a sense of fulfilment and purpose.
“However Age UK recognises that the circumstance of many of those recently retired make it difficult to volunteer – many have caring responsibilities or are in poor health.
“Lord Wei's vision of being able to enjoy 29 years after retirement is far from a reality for many older people – whilst in Kensington and Chelsea the average man might enjoy 16.5 years of active retirement only a few miles away in Newham, at 65 year old man has only 4.4 years of disability free life left on average.”
