Age UK comment on abolition of cheque guarantee card

Michelle Mitchell, Charity Director at Age UK says:
“Older people regard cheques as a safe and secure way to pay for goods and services. The demise of the cheque guarantee card means that there will be even fewer places accepting cheques and older people are more likely to revert to cash which brings its own problems. One in five older people are already using other people to draw out cash for them and this will leave some of them with no option but to hand over their PIN numbers and cash cards to others, going against the guidance given by banks.
“Older people need to have access to a convenient and affordable payment method that they can trust. The payments industry must prioritise designing payment systems which work for everyone. The Government must intervene with legislation if the industry does not show signs it is delivering - payment systems are essential services and their provision can't be left to chance.”
