THE CPA: BRINGING PARLIAMENTARIANS TOGETHER
The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) is an active network of over 17,000 parliamentarians from Commonwealth parliaments and legislatures. Through dialogue, it seeks to foster co-operation and understanding between Parliaments, promote good parliamentary practice and advance parliamentary democracy.
Every Commonwealth legislature that joins the CPA is invited to form an autonomous CPA branch. This includes not only national legislatures, but state, provincial and territorial legislatures. A truly global body, the CPA currently comprises 175 Branches over 6 continents and in 54 countries worldwide.
The CPA is the oldest organisation in the Commonwealth; established in 1911 as the then-Empire Parliamentary Association, it has developed concurrently with the Commonwealth and the spread of parliamentary democracy and last year (2011) celebrated the 100th anniversary of its establishment.
CPA UK: LINKING WESTMINSTER TO THE WORLD
The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK Branch (CPA UK) is one of the largest and most active branches in the CPA community and delivers a comprehensive annual programme both in Westminster and overseas.
CPA UK is governed by an Executive Committee of parliamentarians from all main parties and with a membership from both Houses of Parliament, CPA UK undertakes international parliamentary outreach on behalf of the UK Parliament and the wider CPA.
Its specific focus is on parliamentary diplomacy and parliamentary strengthening activity, seeking to foster co-operation and understanding between parliaments, promote good parliamentary practice and advance parliamentary democracy.
