The review is being undertaken by an independent panel who will review all the latest evidence on breast screening. Their aim is to provide an up-to-date assessment of routine screening, allowing them to decide if the current screening programme in England needs to be changed.
The panel's report is expected to be published late summer 2012.
Digital technology has been replacing photographic film in medical and dental applications for years and breast screening is one of the last areas of imaging in the NHS where film is still routinely used.
Digital mammography differs from traditional film screen mammography as it captures breast tissue images as a digital computer image rather than on x-ray film.
It holds a number of advantages over traditional film screen technology:
We are concerned that no firm deadline has been set for replacing England's breast screening equipment with improved, digital technology.
We are campaigning to make sure all eligible women have access to the best possible breast screening services. Introducing new digital technology in England will help make that happen.
Help us make sure all eligible women across England can access the best possible breast screening services. Find out the status of your area by emailing Lizzie Cook, Senior Campaigns Officer: lizziec@breakthrough.org.uk
