More women are surviving breast cancer than ever before.
Yet 1,000 women in the UK are still dying from breast cancer every month and more needs to be done to improve breast cancer survival.
If we brought our breast cancer survival rates in line with the best in Europe it is estimated that 1,000 more lives a year could be saved in England alone.
The Government’s 2011 cancer strategy, Improving Outcomes – A Strategy for Cancer, states that if England was to achieve cancer survival rates at the European best, an estimated 10,000 lives could be saved every year. For breast cancer, an estimated 1,000 lives could be saved.
Breakthrough's Bridging the Gap in Breast Cancer Survival Charter sets out how we should respond to this challenge and make sure more women survive breast cancer.

Although the charter is based on official figures for England, we consider the broad messages on breast awareness, screening and treatments to be applicable to breast cancer services across all four nations.
Together we can change lives and shape futures.
Where is this information from?
From the EUROCARE studies, which compare cancer survival rates in Europe, it has been calculated that in England 5,000 lives could be saved every year if cancer survival rates improved to the European average, or 10,000 every year if cancer survival rates were at the European best. Research by the International Cancer Benchmarking Partnership (ICBP) has shown that although the gap is narrowing there is much more to be done and if breast cancer survival were to improve then 1,000 lives could be saved every year.
