Blue Cross is Britain's pet charity, dedicated to improving the lives of unwanted and needy animals.
Since it began, back in 1897, it has helped animals in lots of different ways. Its equine centres look after more than 100 horses and ponies at any one time with hundreds more out on loan. Its adoption centres care for and rehabilitate dogs, cats and small animals, finding them new, loving homes. Its hospitals treat pets whose owners can't afford private vets' fees. And its education team spreads the word on responsible pet ownership. The charity helps thousands of animals every year.

"Founded in 1897, Blue Cross has been a lifeline for animals for more than a hundred years. As you may know, we find loving homes for abandoned and unwanted animals through our adoption and equine centres. Our animal hospitals provide treatment for pets whose owners cannot afford private veterinary care. Advice and education about responsible animal ownership runs through all our services.
In 2009 we carried out 73,213 veterinary consultations, rehomed 6,466 small animals and cared for 142 horses, with a further 498 out on loan.
We also worked very hard to develop a new vision for Blue Cross to make sure we can meet future needs. We need to ensure that we are effective with the funds we receive, and that we have a presence in the areas we are most needed and have the maximum impact on animal welfare.
That includes the political and legislative arena and we will be at the front line in supporting the development of companion animal welfare policy and legislation going forward into the future.
